How BuzzyBuddy helps with needle anxiety
The science behind active distraction, vibration, and why counting beats watching.
BuzzyBuddy is a distraction companion app for children and adults facing medical procedures like shots, blood draws, IVs, and vaccines. It pairs interactive brain games with the Buzzy® vibration device, a small bee-shaped tool that uses high-frequency vibration to compete with pain signals before they reach the brain.
The games are built on research by emergency physician Dr. Amy Baxter of Pain Care Labs, the maker of Buzzy®, who showed that pain control works best when the brain is busy making decisions. Passive distraction like videos or cartoons only occupies the eyes. BuzzyBuddy's games ask you to actively count, compare, and choose, which engages the brain's attention circuits and helps trigger natural pain-reducing neurotransmitters. When the brain is actively solving a puzzle, it simply has fewer resources left to register discomfort.
Every session starts with three simple steps: pick your age group, place Buzzy® on the arm with the vibrating wings pressing near the top of the arm bone, and start the games. The app then serves age-appropriate puzzles, from find-and-count scenes for ages 3 to 6, to silly word puzzles for ages 7 to 12, to brain teasers for teens and adults. The difficulty adapts automatically, offering a bigger challenge after every five correct answers so the brain stays engaged for the entire procedure.
BuzzyBuddy was created by a certified Child Life Specialist who has spent years helping children through procedures in real hospital settings. It works entirely offline once installed, so it is reliable in exam rooms, hospital beds, and anywhere else the moment strikes. The app is free to use, works on any phone or tablet, and pairs naturally with the Buzzy® device for the strongest effect.
